Swami Chidbhavananda (March 11, 1898 - November 16, 1985) was born as 'Chinnu' in Senguttaipalayam, near Pollachi in Coimbatore District, Tamil Nadu. He studied at Stanes School, Coimbatore, where he was one of two Indian students in a class with mostly British peers. Although his parents initially wanted him to study in England after graduating from Presidency College, Chennai, his encounter with Swami Vivekananda's philosophy changed his path. Drawn to spiritual life, he began visiting the Ramakrishna Math in Mylapore, eventually choosing to become a sanyasi and joining the Ramakrishna Mission in Belur, West Bengal, under the guidance of his guru, Swami Shivananda, a direct disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. At Swami Shivananda's encouragement, he returned to Tamil Nadu and established an Ashram near Ooty. In 1942, he founded the Ramakrishna Tapovanam in Tiruparaithurai, Tiruchi District, which has since established numerous educational institutions and promotes Ramakrishna-Vivekananda ideals. Swami Chidbhavananda authored over a hundred books in Tamil and English, covering philosophy, social issues, and Hindu scripture, including a widely praised commentary on the Bhagavad Gita. He also founded Vivekananda College in Madurai in 1971, a unique Gurukula Institute of Life-training. His nephew was Bharat Ratna awardee, C. Subramaniam. Swami Chidbhavananda passed away in 1985.
According to Swami Vivekananda, Education is the manifestation of the perfection already in man. The very essence of education is concentration of mind and not collecting of facts. The education, which does not help the common man or people to equip themselves for the struggles in life, which does not bring out strength of character, a spirit of philanthropy and the courage of a lion, is not real education. Real education should be man-making, character-building and assimilation of ideas. Discipline is the need of the hour. It may be too late if we fail to realize it now. The amorphous mind of the growing boy or girl would flower into something rich and strong if placed in the proper atmosphere. It is exactly this proper atmosphere, which we find lacking in the sphere of higher education.Who teaches? It is the atmosphere this is the observation of a great educationist. The unprecedented success of the residential school for boys at Tirupparaitturai near Trichy started by the Tapovanam for the purpose gave rise to the hope of success at the collegiate level also. Our College came into existence in June 1971 in response to this educational necessity and hope. This College was started in June 1971 by the above Tapovanam and affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University with a prophetic vision and a clear foresight in order to provide quality education to the talented youths of backward classes hailing from rural areas. It is intended for men only. It is located in ideal rural surroundings amidst bounteous natural scenery all round on the northern bank of the river Vaigai.
